About Us
Maya Restis: Maya is originally from Misawa, Japan and grew up in San Diego, California. Formally a hard working professional, she now devotes her time and energy to things that are more meaningful, and which allow her to make a difference in her community. A proud gluten-free-vegan, Maya's diet is a cornerstone in her belief that individual satisfaction must not come at the expense of other living things. Most of Maya's free time is lovingly spent volunteering. With San Diego Oceans Foundation, Maya is a White Seabass Caretaker. She also gives cookies, snuggles and care to the homeless pet rats at Wee Companions small animal rescue.
When not saving animals, you can often find her engaging her athletic side, photographing life's moments, and inspiring people to live an active and compassionate vegan lifestyle. Her current interests include running, cycling, yoga, and reading about what next adventure she'd like to convince her husband to do. In March 2010, she and her husband will compete in Racing the Planet's 4 Deserts Atacama Crossing foot race on team Invisible Wings. In 2011, Maya also hopes to compete as part of a four-person cycling team in the world's most challenging endurance event, the Race Across America.
Billy Restis: Billy is a midwestern boy from Michigan who transplanted to San Diego to get his juris doctorate and, as fate would have it, meet his wife. As a plaintiffs' class action attorney, he spends his days fighting corporate fraud for shareholders and consumers alike. Billy is a family man at heart, with his talented and beautiful wife his first priority. Outside the home, Billy is active in his churchand community, and has concluded that it truly is better to give than to receive.
A jack-of-all-trades, Billy has a voracious mind, is proficient in financial and economic matters, and speaks Mandarin, French and Russian. (He can fix a toilet too!) Some say his true talent is in the kitchen, making delicious vegan meals for wife Maya and friends. Having successfully completed his first half-marathon in 2009, he now is in "super" training mode to transform his desk jockey body into a physical tour de force. With a full training schedule, Billy will be competing with his wife Maya in the Atacama Crossing foot race.
