We have carefully selected two very worthy charities to support. We have seen firsthand the work they are doing and personally vouch for their efforts.
For the Atacama Crossing, Invisible Wings has set a fund raising goal of $100,000. This is ambitious to be sure, but together we can do it!
One-hundred percent of the money we raise goes directly to the projects we are supporting. We have recieved assurances from the directors of Animal Acres and Girls Think Tank that none of the money raised will be used for overhead.
Animal Acres is a farmed animal sanctuary and compassionate living center located just 45 minutes from Los Angeles. AA works to promote compassionate living through its farmed animal rescue and refuge efforts, public education and outreach, and advocacy projects to prevent cruelty to farmed animals.
Your dollars will go toward Animal Acres emergency rescue efforts to provide feed, housing, and veterinary care for abused and neglected farmed animals. Specifically, your donation will help build a 14-stall RESCUE CENTER to increase AA rescue programs and provide emergency aid for animals seized from cruelty cases by enforcement agencies and AA humane investigators. Since Animal Acres opened its doors in 2005, it has provided rescue and refuge for over 1,000 suffering cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and other animals used for food production, and helped establish the first humane enforcement agency devoted to farm animals.
Girls Think Tank is a grassroots organization dedicated to empowering the San Diego community by providing a vehicle for change on local issues, particularly homelessness. GTT was recently awarded San Diego Channel 10 News' 2008 Leadership Award for their work on homelessness.
Your dollars will go directly toward providing basic and fundamental needs of San Diego's homeless. In essence, those things we take for granted but are so often lacking for those forced to live on the streets. Ironically, Maya and Billy will be traveling to the driest desert in the world, but will have plentiful water through the event's organizers. However, for the homeless of San Diego, access to clean water is alarmingly scarce. In September 2009, at least five homeless in San Diego were known to pass away because water was unavailable. Your donations will provide clean drinking water to those who have fallen through society's cracks.
Both Girls Think Tank and Animal Acres are 501(c)(3) non-profit charities, so your donations are tax-deductable. Contact your tax professional to see if you are eligible to claim these deductions.
Feel free to check out AA and GTT's websites. If you would like your donation to go toward some other specific need at these charities, send us a note with your pledge amount, and we'll take care of it.
